Guardians
Welcoming faces
From Easter until the end of September, a group of volunteers called Guardians offer a warm welcome to around 20,000 visitors who come through our doors. Our Guardians staff the church every day, providing a friendly face, information about the church and help for those seeking sanctuary or succour.
There is something sacred about the ministry of welcome. Hospitality and openness to the stranger are expressions of love – a love which means that the stranger becomes a friend. At St John’s it is made real by the ministry of the Guardians as well as our outreach and our welcome before, during and after services. Tourist, worshipper or curious local – all are welcome at St John’s.
We currently have around 50 Guardians, taking turns to staff the church for a couple of hours at a time.
