Services at St John's
Why not drop in to St John's to experience our worship? This happens both on Sundays and weekdays. If you are at a Communion service, please join us to share the bread and wine, or come forward to the rail for a blessing.
Occasionally there are changes to our usual pattern of services. You can find out about these on the home page or on the calendar.
Sunday Services
Holy Communion (8am)
A quiet early morning service using the older style language of the Scottish Prayer Book. It lasts about 30 minutes.
Choral Matins (9.30am, not on the first Sunday of each month)
Matins is the traditional service of Morning Prayer. The Scottish Prayer book uses a rich blend of bible texts many of which are set to music by some of the greatest composers. An opportunity to reflect, to prepare for the Sung Eucharist which follows or simply to enjoy the choir. Lasts for about 35 minutes.
Sung Eucharist (10.30am)
With up to 200 in the congregation, the Sung Eucharist is very much the central event of our week. It uses contemporary language and offers a Sunday School, crèche and choir. There is a sermon, hymns, anthems and all are invited to gather around the Lord's Table to share the bread and wine of communion. Afterwards we meet for coffee in the hall. The service lasts for about 70 minutes.
Evensong (6pm)
The beautiful, contemplative service of Evening Prayer. It is very similar to Matins, and offers an equally exciting range of choral music, yet its evening timing means it feels quite different. There is a short sermon too! Evensong lasts just under an hour.
Weekday services
The church is open every day from 8.00am until 4.45pm. You are welcome to enjoy the beauty of the building and to use it for your personal prayers. If you want you can light a candle. And there is a prayer board. Written prayers placed there will be included in our 1.00pm service.
1.00pm Monday to Thursday – Worship at One (In the Chapel)
Words, prayers and quiet time (with simple communion for those who wish it). Lasts approx 20 minutes; ideal for the lunch break from work or for someone visiting the city for the day.
11.00am Wednesday - Holy Communion (In the Chapel)
A quiet service of Holy Communion using the Scottish Prayer Book. Coffee available afterwards.
1.05pm Friday - Prayer Time at St John's (In the Church)
30 minutes set aside for prayer and silence. Each week we focus on a different theme. But you can simply bring your own concerns and, if you want, light a candle to symbolize your prayers.
