Terrace Organisations
Here at St John's, we have a terrace of shops and organisations that play an important role in the life of the church.
Attracting tourists, church members, people who live and work locally and curious passers-by, the terrace is integral to our mission of peace and justice. It’s also a way for the church to make a positive contribution to life in the city centre.
The Terrace includes the following organisations:
The One World Shop
The One World Shop is one of Scotland's largest and best-established stockists of fair trade goods. It stocks a wide variety of clothing, foodstuffs, toys and household goods.
The One World Shop builds links with the developing countries that provide the goods, and also carries out outreach work into local schools etc. The One World Shop’s main administration office is also situated on the terrace.
Cornerstone Bookshop
At a time when it is increasingly difficult for independent booksellers to survive and when there are fewer religious bookshops, we believe that the Cornerstone Bookshop provides an important service. The shop stocks books covering a wide-range of viewpoints. The ecumenical nature of the shop fits in with the St.John's ethos of being a place of faith that encourages conversation and debate. Cornerstone Bookshop is characterised by its knowledgeable, friendly staff and peaceful ambience.
Peace and Justice Centre
The central aim of the Peace and Justice Centre is to "make known the alternatives to war". The Centre does this through:
- providing information to casual passers-by
- organising events involving key decision makers
- taking part in peaceful resistance.
The Centre also provides administrative support to a large number of other groups furthering the cause of peace.
Henderson's@St John’s Cafe
Henderson's original restaurant (in Hanover Street) is Edinburgh's best known vegetarian restaurant. Henderson's@St John’s is their fresh take on the original. The cafe offers food that is fresh, seasonal and organic. As well as being open during the day, the cafe also hosts a number of evening music events and the walls are home to regular art exhibitions. Henderson's@St John’s plays a key role in ensuring that St John's is a place of welcome, conversation and entertainment for people of all ages.
