Services at St John's

In all our worship we seek to give our best to God, to lift up our hearts and minds as well as our voices. In our preaching we are not afraid to explore our faith in the light of the best modern scholarship. In our prayers we reach out in concern to all the needs of God's world and ask for strength to become, in our small way, instruments of God's justice and peace.

We are inspired by a vision of God's love unrestricted by race, gender, creed, age or sexuality. One of the ways in which this is made visible is through our worship.

Sunday Services

Holy Communion (8am)

A quiet, spoken service of holy communion following the Book of Common Prayer.

Sung Eucharist (9.45am)

On the first Sunday of each month the two morning services at 9.45am and 11.15am are replaced by a single service at 10.30am.

This is our most popular service, with around 200 in the congregation, Sunday School, creche and choir. It is a family communion service with a sermon, hymns, anthems, and following the 1982 liturgy of the Scottish Episcopal Church. After the service, the congregation gather for coffee in the hall.

Choral matins (11.15am)

On the first Sunday of each month the two morning services at 9.45am and 11.15am are replaced by a single service at 10.30am.

Matins is a traditional service of words and music using the Scottish Prayer Book, of readings, responses, psalm, canticles, anthem and sermon. As well as providing the congregation with opportunities to respond in praise, the choir may often be heard at their most spectacular.

First Sunday - Ten Thirty

On the first Sunday of each month there is one morning service of Holy Communion at 10.30am. The style ranges from all-age worship, a traditional festal mass, or the celebration of a special occasion such as our Patronal Festival, or Harvest.

Evensong (6pm)

This beautiful and contemplative service follows the liturgy of the Scottish Prayer Book. Words and music follow a traditional pattern of responses, psalm, readings, canticles, anthem and sermon.
