Children, Young People and Families
Visit our children's corner, in the south aisle of the church.
Our ministry with children, young people and families is co-ordinated by Reuben Addis who is employed on a part-time basis in this role. During our main Sung Eucharist we offer crèche facilities and toddler activities for children who are not yet of school age and Sunday School for those who are in their primary years. We also have a special area within the main church that has been set up to make it easier for families with small children to participate in our worship outside of the crèche session.
We at St John’s believe that children, just as much as adults, have a capacity for spiritual experience. Our Sunday School sessions focus very much on the experience of imaginative response to the Bible which allows participants to engage with stories in their own way, and values their own spiritual experience. To this end we use materials and ‘teaching’ resources that are provided through the Godly Play network. You can lean more about Godly Play here.
An extensive programme of activities is arranged for families and children during August under the auspices of the Just Festival This usually involves a combination of satorytelling, fun messy activities and something to do with food...
What about parents?
Being a parent is a delightful but occasionally somewhat challenging experience! One of the wonderful things about belonging to a faith community is that there are always people around with whom to share experiences and look for support. We hold a bi-monthly Family Meal at the Rectory which provides a fun social time for children and a chance for parents to meet and chat together as well as sharing ina simple meal.
There is no such thing as a ‘normal’ family; many of the families at St John’s do not conform to the stereotypical mother, father and children model. An informal support group for lone parents meets on a regular basis – you can learn more by emailing email@example.com
