Welcome Space
Welcome Space, known initially as Warm Space, was set up in the winter of 2023-4, offering, to anyone who wished to come in, light refreshments and a place to sit for a few hours in a warm environment. The following spring, when many such initiatives closed, it was decided that this one would stay open.
Warm Space then became Welcome Space and has run continuously every Monday from 4-6 pm. Staffed by a member of the clergy team and an enthusiastic and dedicated band of volunteers, hot and cold drinks, soup, bread and pancakes, cheese and fruit, are provided. As well as lots of biscuits! Wrapped chocolate biscuits and jaffa cakes are especially popular! A few takeaway items such as pot noodles, small cereal packets, tinned goods, and toiletries are also provided. The aim is to steadily increase the range of items offered for takeaway, including high protein bars and drinks. There is also a small emergency stock of sleeping bags and blankets to be given out as needed
The past year has seen a very significant increase in the number of people coming through the doors. Numbers obviously vary, but there are new faces every week, as well as a large core of regulars. Some come for food, some to sit and chat and do crosswords, some just to sit. The volunteers spend time getting to know the guests and finding out how best they can be supported.
The atmosphere is lively and friendly, with plenty noise and laughter and there is no doubt that the service is much appreciated. Recent quotes from guests comment on the “friendly, helpful, willing and caring” volunteers, the “respite from being out there”, the “cheery and welcoming” atmosphere.
New volunteers for helping run the Welcome Space and chatting with our guests are always welcome. Please use the form below to get in touch.
